I have arrived in Germany! October 4, 2009

I arrived almost three hours prior to departure as requested by our team leader on Saturday.  That got us off to an even longer start to a long day.  The first flight was from Houston to Frankfurt.  Unfortunately, I had a middle seat.  To my left was a guy who thought it was okay to have his knees in my leg space.  To the right was another guy who thought it was okay to have his knees in my leg space.  On top of that, he boarded the plane reeking of alcohol... and he kept the drinks coming for the rest of the flight, even two vodkas with orange juice with breakfast.  Other than that, the flight over was pretty uneventful.  The food was really bad too.  Once we got to Frankfurt, we had a few hour layover.  Dena and I found ourselves at an Italian cafe and indulged in chocolate croissants and hot chocolate and Fanta.  My flight from Frankfurt to Leipzig was much more pleasant.  I was on an aisle seat and just got comfy when we landed.  It was a pretty quick flight.

I was pleasantly surprised at the airport to see a nice youthful looking group of people greet us.  Right away we found out that our housing plans had changed.  I was no longer staying with Dena.  A very nice young married couple is the family I'm staying with.  Their flat is in city.  It is light and airy and I will be comfortable here.  After getting settled in and chatting with my host family, I took a huge snooze.  I hope it wasn't too long.  Now I'm waiting to have my first home-cooked meal.  (Dinner was really good.  I had breaded pork, spätzle, and white wine.)

I'm not sure what's on the agenda for tomorrow, but I did hear we get to have a late start to the day which is nice.  (I have recently discovered we will be going to the zoo and learning about monkeys!)

By the way, I'm happy to have been spoken to in German several times already.  It is nice to know I look like a local instead of standing out like a tourist.
